Polaris (North Star)

Polaris (Nordstjernen, Polestar) er den klareste stjerne i Ursa Minor konstellation, Ca. 434 lysår væk fra Jorden.

Den er kendt for at stå næsten stille i luftrummet, mens hele den nordlige himmel bevæger sig omkring den. Det skyldes, at det ligger næsten ved den nordlige himmelske pol, det punkt, som hele nordhimlen tilsyneladende vender om. Derfor markerer den vej nordpå; Polen markerer sand nord, hvilket gør nordstjernen vigtig i navigationen, da stjernens højde over horisonten tæt svarer til observatørens breddegrad.

For observatører på Nordpolen ligger stjernen direkte overliggende. Til observatører ved ækvator sitter Polaris lige i horisonten.
