Tidlig spredning af en kontinental plade og et lille hav dannes mellem de nyopdelte kontinenter. Da kontinenterne fortsætter med at glide fra hinanden, vil kanterne på kontinenterne afkøles og derfor blive tungere og synke under det nyligt dannede hav. Denne type pladegrænse hedder en divergerende pladegrænse. Det røde hav er et eksempel på fase B, Se Wilson cyklus.
