KAFFYØYRA – Polar Station of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń
The station is located in the north-western part of the Kaffyøyra coastal plain on the east coast of the Forlandsundet. It is located outside areas under special protection. The first buildings of the station – a container house, 24 sqm big – were created during the first research expedition of the Toruń center in 1974.
The station was expanded in 2007. The new part of the station with an area of 32 m2 on the ground floor and 24 m2 on the first floor consists of a main room, workshop, room and two sleeping mezzanines, an additional laboratory, storage areas, a bath and garage for boats, snowmobiles and engines.
The total area of all rooms is approximately 100m2. The station operates 3 to 4 months a year, in summer and spring, only exceptionally during the winter season. The research program covers almost all components of the geographical environment, primarily in the field of glaciology, geomorphology and glacial hydrology, climatology.
Equipment:
- a well equipped meteorological station
- automatic meteorological stations to be set in places of planned tests
- limnigrafy on observed watercourses
- ground and ice temperature measurement systems
- ablation pole systems on glaciers
The station has snowmobiles and pontoons with engines.
