Τα κρυπτοχρώματα είναι υποδοχείς για το μπλε και το υπεριώδες (UV-A) φως, που βρίσκονται σε ζώα, φυτά και βακτήρια.
Οι πρωτεΐνες αυτές υπάρχουν, π.χ. στα μάτια των αποδημητικών πτηνών, πιθανώς επιτρέποντάς τα να “δουν” τις γραμμές του μαγνητικού πεδίου της Γης, κάτι το οποίο παίζει ρόλο στην πλοήγηση κατά τη διάρκεια της μετανάστευσής τους.
