Det udtryk, man plejede at kalde forskere, rejsende, eventyrere, der udforskede Jordens polarområder. I dag er der hovedsageligt videnskabeligt eller teknisk personale, der arbejder i baser i arktisk eller antarktisk eller medlemmer af videnskabs- eller sportsekspedition til begge områder.
