Nautički sumrak započinje ujutro kada je geometrijsko središte Sunca 12 stupnjeva ispod horizonta i završava kada je geometrijsko središte Sunca 6 stupnjeva ispod horizonta. Počinje navečer kada je geometrijsko središte Sunca 6 stupnjeva ispod horizonta i završava kada je geometrijsko središte Sunca 12 stupnjeva ispod horizonta.
Nautički sumrak zaslužan je da pomorci mogu ploviti tijekom ovog doba dana, jer su vidljive i zvijezde i horizont. Zemljani predmeti mogu biti teško razlučivi, pa stoga može biti potrebna umjetna rasvjeta.
