Период ноћи који траје најмање 24 сата се назива поларна ноћ. То значи да најмање 24 сата Сунце остаје испод хоризонта. Поларна ноћ се може доживети на географским ширинама изнад арктичког круга (66.5629 ° или 66 ° 33’46.6 ” N) и испод Антарктичког круга (66.5629 ° С или 66 ° 33’46.6 ” S).
