Coronal mass ejections

Coronal mass ejections – CME is an eruptive release from the solar corona (the Sun’s outer atmosphere) of a large cloud of plasma Koronalna blasts into space a billion tons of particles traveling millions of miles an hour. The underlying cause of CMEs is not well understood. Astronomers agree, however, that the sun’s magnetic field plays a major role.

When the Sun’s activity increases towards solar maximum, coronal mass ejections become more common and we can see multiple coronal mass ejections every day.

The most prominent effect of a CME is when it passes by the Earth and creates a geomagnetic storm, which can interrupt satellites and power grids on Earth.
