Drivhuseffekten oppstår når drivhusgasser i atmosfæren hindrer refleksjon av solstråling som treffer jorden. Gassene absorberer refleksjonen og sender den tilbake mot jorden i stedet for å ut av atmosfæren. Som følge av denne prosessen øker temperaturen på klodens overflate.
