Koronal masseemission (CME)

Koronal masseemission (CME) er et udbrud fra solkronen (solens ydre atmosfære).

En stor sky af plasma kastes i rummet, og den består af milliarder tons partikler med en hastighed på millioner af miles i timen.

Årsagen til CME forstås ikke godt. Astronomer er dog enige om, at solmagnetfeltet spiller en vigtig rolle.

Den mest fremtrædende effekt af en CME er, når den passerer gennem jorden, skaber en geomagnetisk storm, der kan forstyrre satellitter og elnettet
