Tropopausen er skillet mellom troposfæren og stratosfæren (12-14 km over bakken). Den er 2-3 km høy, og er den delen av atmosfæren hvor temperaturen er stabil og kaldest (se figur).
De fleste cirrusskyer (skyer dannet av iskrystaller, også kalt fjærskyer) danner og utvikler seg i tropopausen.
