Lithosfæren

Lithosfæren er det stive, yderste lag af jorden. Den består af skorpe og øverste kappe og ligger over asthenosfæren. Grænsen mellem litosfæren og asthenosfæren er afledt baseret på forskellen i deres mekaniske egenskaber og er generelt forbundet med isotermen på 1000ºC.

Der er to typer af litosfærer, hvoraf den ene er oceanisk (findes i havbassinerne, hvor der findes oceanisk skorpe) og mindre tætte kontinentale litosfærer (hvor kontinental skorpe forekommer).

Lithosfæren er opdelt i tektoniske plader og et underfelt af geofysik, der omfatter studier af deres bevægelse og egenskaber kaldes geodynamik.
