I 1920´erne erklærede serbiske geofysiker og astronomen Milutin Milanković at cykliske ændringer i parametrene for jordens orbital og roterende bevægelse påvirker jordens klima.
Der er tre hovedkomponenter, der ændre placering og mængden af solstråling som når jordens overflade.
