Når et landskab eroderes, transporteres sedimenterne (fast materiale) andetsteds ved hjælp af enten vand, vind eller is og vil efterhånden blive deponeret som sedimenter. Sedimenter kan bestå af både stenfragmenter (både små og store), mineraler, planter og dyr.
