Undersøisk permafrost

Undersøisk permafrost (submarine permafrost, offshore permafrost) er permafrost, der forekommer under havbunden i polare områder. Den adskiller sig fra andre permafrost i, at det er levn, varm, og generelt nedbrydende. Tilstedeværelsen, karakteristika og fordeling af undersøisk permafrost påvirkes stærkt af regionale og lokale forhold: hyldetopografi, sediment eller stenarter, saltholdigheder, isforhold, vanddybder, tilstedeværelse af isplader osv. Det indeholder en stor mængde gashydrater , og dets nedbrydning kan fremskynde frigivelse af methan, der bidrager til klimaændringer.
