Jordens rotasjonsakse er ikke helt stabil, men «skjelver» litt. Dette kalles presesjon. Det betyr at Nordpolen ikke alltid peker i nøyaktig samme retning mot himmelen – den følger en sirkelbane som det tar omlag 26.000 år å fullføre. Det høres ut som en svært sakte bevegelse, men det påvirker en del fenomener på jorda, blant annet intensiteten av årstidene våre.
