Grensen der et opprinnelig kontinent trekkes fra hverandre i to separate kontinentalplater kalles en divergerende plategrense. Etter hvert dannes det jordskorpe mellom platene, se platetektonikk. Den midtatlantiske rygg er et eksempel på en slik grense.
