Havbunnsspredning er dannelse av nytt areal med havbunn, og det skjer som følge av vulkansk aktivitet langs midthavsryggene. Når tektoniske plater beveger seg bort fra hverandre oppstår brudd i litosfæren. Magma stiger da opp gjennom disse bruddene, kjøles ned når det når overflaten og skaper ny jordskorpe.
