Orografisk sky

Orografiske skyer oppstår når fuktige luftmasser blir tvunget oppover av jordens topografi, for eksempel fjellkjeder. Luften stiger (såkalte anabatiske vinder), blir avkjølt og danner vanndamp som formes til skyer (og normalt også nedbør). Etter å ha steget over fjellets høyde, strømmer den nå tørre og tette luften nedover igjen med tyngdekraften (såkalte katabatiske vinder).
