Nilas

Nilas – or “new ice” is one of initial stages of sea-ice forming, mainly on calm waters. It’s a continuous, thin (less than 10 centimeters thick) sheet of ice, an elastic crust with matt and dark surface, becoming lighter as it thickens. Nilas develops from subsequent downward growth. Wafer-thin sheets of ice slide over each other and form rafts of thicker ice.
