Τροφική αλυσίδα είναι ένα γραμμικό δίκτυο συνδέσμων σε έναν τροφικό ιστό που ξεκινά από αυτότροφους / παραγωγούς οργανισμούς (όπως το γρασίδι ή τα δέντρα, που χρησιμοποιούν ηλιακή ακτινοβολία για να τραφούν) και τελειώνει στα κορυφαία αρπακτικά είδη (apex predators), όπως οι αρκούδες Γκρίζλι (grizzly) ή οι φάλαινες δολοφόνοι.
