Calypso Station
Polar Station of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University is located in Calypsobyen (south Bellsund) on the west coast of the Recherche fjord at Spitsbergen. The Calypso station was launched in 1986 and consists of a complex of buildings of the old Calypsobyen mining settlement. Station buildings come from the beginning of the 20th century (the oldest was built in 1901) and have a historic character. The station is used only in the summer season (June-October).
The station can host several people. Scientific research conducted by scientists at Calypso has a comprehensive and interdisciplinary character and covers such fields of science as: geomorphology, geology, soil science, hydrology, climatology and meteorology, environmental protection, botany, biochemistry and radiochemistry.
