Frost cracks form in frozen sediments when temperature quickly drops below -20/-30 centigrade. In such conditions the volume of the ice decreases, causing tensions and cracking of the ground. Grains of ice and sediments can fall into the cracks. Seasonally occurring cracks lead to formation of frost wedges.
