Svalbard
Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, which, according to the provisions of the Spitsbergen Treaty of 1920, is owned by Norway. Administrative authority over Svalbard is exercised by the governor who is appointed by the Norwegian government.
The archipelago consists of nine islands. The largest is Spitsbergen with the largest town of Longyearbyen, which has almost 2,000 permanent residents.
In Russian terminology (Russia is one of the states, that signed the Spitsbergen Treaty), the term “Spitsbergen” also functions as the name of the entire archipelago.
