Mattak

Also known as maktaaq, maktak, maktaq (see in Inuktitut Living Dictionary), depending on some dialects spoken by Inuits, the indigenous people living on Greenland, or itgilgyn in Chukchi language, and kyltyngyn in Nenets language – ethnic groups living in Syberia.

Mattak is a sliced whale (usually bowhead whale, beluga or narwhal) skin with blubber. Originally is served raw, but nowadays might be consumed breaded, deep fried or pickled. It is traditional food in Inuits, Chukchi and Nenets cuisine.

Mattak is rich in vitamin C, and used to play a very important role in diet of indigenous people living in the Artcic.
