Sten-gletscher

Sten-gletscher er en tungformet masse af sten, is, sne, mudder og vand, der bevæger sig langsomt ned i dalen, med en lille mængde is synlig på overfladen. De kan findes i høje bjerge, over trælinjen.

Oprindelsen af sten-gletschere er stadig ikke fuldt anerkendt. En gruppe forskere siger, at de strikt er resultatet af periglaciale processer (kun relateret til permafrost), den anden gruppe hævder, at rockgletsjere også kan udvikle sig fra debris-dækket gletsjere.

Sten-gletschere er en kilde til ferskvandstilførsel til byerne Santiago, Chile (5,3 millioner indbyggere) og Mendoza, Argentina (1,1 millioner indbyggere).
