En bundet jernformation er et sediment deponeret på bunden af iltfattige hav for mange millioner år siden, sandsynligvis via cyanobakterier. Den består af lagdelt sten, der indeholder koncentrerede jernoxidbånd i forskellige kemiske forbindelser. Jernformationer anvendes til udvinding af jernmalm.
