Døden er ulovlig i Longyearbyen

Det er forbudt for folk at dø i Longyearbyen på Svalbard. Byens kirkegård ophørte med at acceptere nye indbyggere i 1950 ‘. Hvorfor? Det blev opdaget, at permafrost forhindrer ligene i at nedbrydes. Det betyder, at sygdomme, som den afdøde har, kan sprede sig.

11 mennesker døde og blev begravet i landsbyen under den spanske influenzapandemi i 1918, som dræbte en anslået 5% af verdens befolkning. 1918-influenzapandemien dræbte så mange mennesker, at der var flere kroppe end kister.

I dag flyves den terminale syg i Longyearbyen til fastlandet og dernæst begraves der.
