Fænomenet forårsaget af drivhusgasser i atmosfæren. Disse stoffer forhindrer frigivelse af infrarød stråling fra Jorden, fordi de absorberer det og returnerer det til atmosfæren. Som et resultat af denne proces øges temperaturen på vores planets overflade.
Drivhuseffekten er en af hovedårsagerne til den globale opvarmning.
