Fugle “guano” køler Arktis

Hver sommer bringer havfugle en masse organisk materiale til Arktis; deres “guano” kan faktisk have en gavnlig effekt: lidt køling af regionen truet af klimaændringer.

Gas ammoniak er rigelig i den arktiske luft; Det frigives takket være bakterier, der foder på fuglens pokefrigivelser omkring 40.000 tons ammoniak hvert år. Når det går i luften, virker ammonien med svovlsyre og vand, der danner partikler, der bliver kernerne omkring, hvilke vandet kondenserer, og skyerne dannes.

Køleeffekterne opstår, når skyerne reflekterer sollys tilbage i rummet, og skyer af mindre dråber afspejler mere sollys. Effekten er dog for lille til at kompensere for klimaændringer.
