Eine Indikatorspezies ist eine Tier- oder Pflanzenart, die für ihre Umgebung und dem Zustand derselben charakteristisch ist. Das sind zum Beispiel bestimmte Flechtenarten, dessen Vorkommen auf geringe Luftverschmutzung hindeuten oder bestimmte Pilzarten, die typisch für alte Wuchswälder sind.
