Hiatus

A hiatus is represented by a bedding plane. This plane indicates a time interval missing in the geological column, either because nothing was deposited or because the sediments that did accumulate were eroded later on.

Hiatuses occur frequently in the geological column. The sediments present often represent specific events that may only occur once every 100 or 1000 year.
