Blubber

Blubber è uno strato (folto e denso) di tessuto connettivo e tessuto grasso, su trichechi, balene e sigilli. Questo tessuto adiposo ha una conducibilità termica relativamente bassa (inferiore ai muscoli o alla pelle).

Il blubber dei mammiferi marini artici conserva l’energia e fornisce isolamento, permettendo di sopravvivere in acqua fredda. Lo spessore di questo strato può raggiungere i 30 cm.

Per i popoli indigeni artici (specialmente il blubber della balena) forniva sia cibo ad alta energia, sia olio per il carburante.
