Alminnelig polarnatt forekommer på steder hvor det geometriske senteret til solen ikke stiger over 6 grader under horisonten i minst ett døgn. Det forekommer ved breddegrader som ligger 6° nord for den nordlige polarsirkelen (dvs. nord for 72.56°N) og 6° sør for den sydlige polarsirkelen (dvs. sør for 72.56°S).
