En indirekte og enkel metode for måling av vannføring i elver, som ikke krever komplisert måleutstyr. Man måler ganske enkelt tiden det tar før en flytende gjenstand flytter seg en viss avstand nedstrøms. Metoden brukes kun til grove estimeringer på grunn av nokså høy unøyaktighet.
