Kryoturbasjon er en viktig prosess i det aktive laget av permafrost, hvor forskjellige materialer fra forskjellige lag av jorda blandes med hverandre på grunn av konstant opptining og nedfrysing. Fordi jordmaterialene har ulike farger dannes det særegne mønstre nedover i bakken.
