Nautisk polarnatt oppstår på steder hvor det geometriske senteret til solen ikke stiger over 12 grader under horisonten i minst ett døgn. Det forekommer ved breddegrader som ligger 12° nord for den nordlige polarsirkelen (dvs. nord for 78.56 °N) og 12° sør for sydlige polarsirkelen (dvs. sør for 78.56 °S).
