Zjawisko wywołane działaniem gazów cieplarnianych w atmosferze. Ich działanie polega na tym, że zapobiegają wydostawaniu się promieniowania podczerwonego z Ziemi, ponieważ pochłaniają je i oddają do atmosfery. W wyniku tego procesu następuje zwiększenie temperatury powierzchni naszej planety.
Efekt cieplarniany jest jedną z głównych przyczyn globalnego ocieplenia.
