Do orogenezy dochodzi, gdy ściskana jest płyta kontynentalna; zmusza to litosferę Ziemi (skorupa i góny płaszcz) do zgniecenia i wypycha część płyty kontynentalnej w górę. W efekcie wypiętrza się jedno lub wiele pasm górskich. Zwykle dzieje się tak w wyniku zderzeń płyt tektonicznych. W tej sposób powstały Himalaje, Alpy i Appalachy.
