Свежий лед – это одна из начальных форм морского льда, одна из первых стадий его формирования, прежде всего на спокойных водах. Это тонкая (толщиной менее 10 см) ледяная корка, упругий слой с матовой и темной поверхностью, цвет которого светлеет, когда становится более толстым. Тонкие листы ледяного покрова постоянно движутся и образуют плоты более толстого льда.
