Istid

En istid er en geologsk periode hvor klimaet blir spesielt kaldt, og større områder enn vanlig blir dekket av is. Noe mer nøyaktig definisjon har man ikke blitt enige om. Jorda har hatt mange istider de siste 2,6 millioner årene. Periodene mellom istidene, hvor klima er varmere og isdekket mindre, kalles interglasiale perioder (eller enklere sagt; mellomistid).

Vi er nå i en slik interglasial periode, som startet for om lag 11 700 år siden. Den siste istiden, som ofte kalles Weischelian i Europa, varpå sitt kaldeste for 22.000 år siden.
