Diapause

Diapause kommer fra det græske ord diapausis, hvilket betyder “pause” og blev først beskrevet af entomologen William Wheeler i 1893.

Disse er livscyklusforsinkelser fremkaldt af ændringer i abiotiske tegn og ændringer i dagslys, temperatur eller fødevaretilgængelighed.

Markeret med en dvaletilstand, hviler den økologiske og evolutionære betydning af diapausen, på denne strategi som gør det muligt at overvinde hårde miljøforhold, hvilket forhindrer bestandens udryddelse. Det er typisk for mange insekter og kvaler, et par krebsdyr og snegle.
