En primærprodusent er en organisme nederst i næringskjeden, og som ved hjelp av fotosyntese bygger næringsstoffer som kan brukes av andre organismer. Nesten alt liv på jorden er avhengig av primærprodusentene. På land er primærprodusentene først og fremst planter, mens alger har denne rollen til vanns.
