Archebakterier

Enkeltcellede ikke-nukleare organismer, der adskiller sig fra eubakterier (“sande bakterier”), som normalt lever i ekstreme omgivelser, begge grupper tilhørende prokaryoter.

De blev oprindeligt antaget at være evolutionært ældre end de sande bakterier; Det er imidlertid nu kendt, at disse grupper har udviklet sig parallelt og er lige så gamle. Genetiske undersøgelser har vist, at archea er meget forskellige fra bakterier og er tættere forbundet med eukaryoter end bakterier, og kan endda være startgruppen for eukaryoter.
