Diurnal lodret migration

Diurnal lodret migration (Diurnal vertical migration, DVM) er dyreplanktonets lodrette bevægelse i havet (eller søen). De bevæger sig fra de varme overfladelag, der giver rigelig mad, til koldere, dybere vand hvor fødevareforsyningen er dårlig.

Dyreplankton forbliver under fotiske zone i løbet af dagen, bevæger sig mod overfladen efter solnedgang og vender tilbage til dybet før daggry.

Fotoresponsenerne af disse organismer bliver funktionelt signifikant under sådanne vandringer, da man er enig om at lyset er den dominerende miljøfaktor som kontrollerer DVM.

Denne strategi antages hovedsagelig at være et anti-rovdyrforsvar (undgå visuelt orienterende rovdyr). Men nu viser det sig, at det kan hjælpe med at optimere metaboliske forhold – få betydelige metaboliske fordele, hvis de begyndte at fodre et par timer før solnedgang.
