Levende fossil

Levende fossiler er organismer, der har bevaret mere eller mindre den samme form over en lang, lang periode som millioner af år. Cyanobakterier, krokodiller og herb gingko biloba er blandt kendte levende fossiler. Disse arter har fundet en sjælden økologisk niche, hvor der ikke har været behov for at ændre sig. De er ikke bevis for evolution. De bekræfter bare, at nye evolutionære tilpasninger ikke er nødvendige i et stabilt miljø.

De har ofte overlevet mere masseudslettelse, og mange forskere anser dem for at være et sjældent glimt af, hvordan livet på jorden var for længe siden.
