Sandur

Sandur eller udvasket slette er dannet af glacial sedimenter deponeret af smeltevand som løber ud ved slutningen eller snuden af en gletsjer. Sandur består af sand og grus, som gletsjeren har slebet fra den underliggende overflade den strømmer over. Sanden transporteres over udvaskningsfladen under oversvømmelser eller fanget inden for drivis, hvor der smelter indskud.

Ordet sandur er afledt af det islandske sprog, hvor den største udvasket slette i verden kan findes Skeidalársandur (1.300 km2).

Sandur kan deles op i ydre og indre:

  • Ydre sandur, dannet nær en endemoræne, hvor vandet fra en gletsjers flod skærer gennem et bånd af frontal moræner (foto 1 og 2).
  • Indre sandur, dannet ved gletsjernes næse, mellem dens forside og bæltet af endemorænen, under en hurtig tilbagetrækning af gletsjeren (foto 3).
