Thermohaline sirkulation

Thermohalin cirkulation er en stor, langsom og dyb havstrøm, som er drevet af tæthedsforskelle i vandet. Tætheden af vandet afhænger af temperatur og saltholdighed. I polare områder bliver havvand meget koldt, og is dannes. Vandet omkring isen bliver saltere, fordi saltet udelades under fryseprocessen. Da vandet bliver saltere, stiger densiteten (det bliver “tungere”) og det begynder at synke. Dette vand vil så bevæge sig vandret under blanding med andet mindre saltvand, indtil det stiger tilbage til overfladen.

Termohalin cirkulation er meget vigtigt for nutidens klima på planeten, og global opvarmning kan for eksempel påvirke dette. ved opvarmning af havoverfladen.
