Naledier er lagdelte masser av frosset vann. Lagene oppstår fordi det første islaget gjør at nytt tilstrømmende vann (fra isbre eller elv) ikke lenger har plass nok til å flyte under isen og tar i stedet veien over og rundt islaget. Når det er kaldt nok vil dette vannet selv fryse og danne et nytt lag. Så gjentar historien seg.
