Wstęgowa ruda żelaza to warstwowana formacja żelazista – skała osadowa zdeponowana na dnie morskich w środowisku pozbawionym cyrkulacji tlenu i wód oceanicznych. Obecnie warstwy te zawierają najwięcej żelaza zachowanego (i eksploatowanego).
